Rogue-Lite Self-Balancing?

Warning ☢️ Heavy Game Design post ahead. How about we talk about a game genre that essentially self balances itself? 😱 Rogue-lite mechanics are one of the few systems in game design that self-balance itself. Of course its not completely hands off, you still need to make sure that you are creating difficulty spikes, flow curve, etc. But it is much more forgiving than other genres, especially compared to its hard brother Roguelike. There, you loose everything ☠️ and the main focus is rewarding player skill above all. If you learned and know the game, it doesn't matter if you always start from scratch. But Rogue-lites rewards you for every run that you do, giving you resources even if you fail, which makes that time meaningful, instead of zero progression you would get during a fail state in Roguelike 😭.This […]

DC: Dark Legion scaled to $300K a Day!

FunPlus's DC: Dark Legion scaled to $300K a day revenue 🤑 Pulling in $10 M during its first month from the initial release. Will it be enough to make a dent in the 4X genre 🤔? This is a very ambitious iteration of multiple games stitched together. We have the idle part, which is basically Frozen City 🥶, but it uses the Fallout Shelter visual. Afterwards the game ads AFK Journey style squad RPG, with its heavy Gacha mechanics. The single player content is done through on rails mechanic of your characters going through a predefined map with events and encounters like Capybara GO. And then lastly it also ads the 4X layer, such as the map radar feature, where you can attack patrols of other player and a world map. This is where the formula start to heavily differ […]

Matching Story scaled to $300K a Day!

Vertex Games's Matching Story scaled to $300K a day after nearly 3 years in soft launch. Is it a Match3 game or a Merge 3 game? Read the story behind this exceptional combo here 😎 It was soft-launched in May 2021 and only started scaling at the start of last year. Initially, we thought that this was a Merge game that added the Match3 core later, but this was not the case. It was a combination of Isometric Merge3 + Match3 from the initial build 😱. The Match 3 layer is basically Royal Match now, with all of its trigger events meta and collectible album, etc. But instead of a basic visual renovation progression based on stars, you get chests with merge tokens after winning Match 3 levels. Also, this is Merge 3, not Merge 5, as traditional isometric merge games […]

The whole Merge subgenre did $83M IAP last month.

The whole Merge subgenre did $83 Million IAP revenue 🤑 last month. Back in 2020 Merge Dragons did $10 Mil. a month and there were no Merge 2 games to oppose it, so how did we got here? Currently, Gossip Harbor is leading the whole category, doing $35 Mil. a month being followed by Travel Town with $21. Mil. But this was not always the case and as you see the graph on the bottom, before, there were only Merge 3 or isometric merge games. Gram Games's Merge Dragons launching in 2017 still doing around $4 Mil. a month had already passed $435 Mil. lifetime 💰 revenue. It was later followed by Big Fish Games's Evermerge in 2019, which already got past $120 Mil. lifetime. This subgenre peaked in May 2020 and is declining ever since. What happened there?Metacore's Merge […]

All training timers ⏲️ for troops, heroes healing, spells, siege machines were removed from the game. This is a continuation of the removal of unit costs in 2022, which already created a much more strategic experience with out the worry of spending resources. Similarly during the economy revamp during the introduction of the battle pass in 2019, this again accelerated the content progression speed of the game, which now has townhall 🏛️ 17 as max level. It started with max level 8 during its initial release during August 2012. You can see how Supercell is continuously adjusting the game according to the current content length in order to […]

MIXI, Inc.'s Monster Strike just hit $8 billion 🤑 in lifetime revenue this month. It is THE biggest gacha game of all time. Why did you never hear of it 🤨? Because it makes 99% of its revenue from Japan market only 🇯🇵. There was an English version before, but they shut it down in 2017. Why? long story for another post 😅. It is one of the cornerstones of the mobile game industry. It is the 2nd mobile game that ever made $1 Billion in revenue and currently the 3rd mobile game in the overall lifetime revenue chart. It is still casually making $30-40 mil. a month. Even Supercell was trying to follow up on it with their now killed game Spooky pop. So what is this game about? Publishing the most successful VR Games on Mobile?

Estoty's I am Cat and I am Security are currently making $300K a day 🤑 in ad revenue together with 500K downloads a day. Is publishing the most successful VR game on mobile the best trick you've heard about? 😱 This is one of the most craziest stories that we covered this year, where literally the most viral VR game got ported on mobile, it spams interstitials like there is no tmrw 😵, has rewarded videos even for basic interaction (like you see in the piano image) still keeps its viral traffic and then ... profit 💰 I am Cat has 62K reviews and 4.9 score on the Meta VR store, which is more than Beat Saber! How does PvP counter play systems work?

Warning ☢️ Heavy Game Design post ahead 😁 How does PvP counterplay systems work? We already talked about the elemental system driving PvE games, but how about Player versus Player games? Again, similar to the elemental system, PvP counterplay systems can go from pretty straightforward (rock-paper-scissors ✂️) to some very advanced mechanics as faction and unit synergies, specific traits, direct immunity mechanics, and environment advantages. This system is powering some of the most biggest games on the market, such as Riot Games's League of Legends or Supercell's Clash Royale & Brawl Stars. Again, it is the hidden reason why you need to be able to master and, most importantly, collect or upgrade all or most of the characters in the game to stay competitive 😎. This takes much more skill than just playing with elemental affinities and throwing water dungeons […]

Century Games’s Kingshot: $300K a Day

Century Games's Kingshot has already generated revenue exceeding $300K a day. It is the second biggest game in their portfolio after Whiteout Survival (which is still making $4 Mil. a day 😱). How is it different? The game starts with the proven Frozen City 🥶 Idle template, which was simplified as there is no temperature control. Instead, there is the occasional invasion of bandits attacking ⚔️ your city, which adds active gameplay similar to Archero. 30 minutes later, the watchtower building unlocks and walks you through the usual radar feature of the 4X map, and then 4X takes over, similar to Whiteout Survival. Also there is a Fishing minigame added in the style of Ridiculous fishing 🎣. This onboarding is much different than High Seas hero 🚢, their previous 4X game, which actually have 3 cores - starts with Legend […]

$300K a Day: Rivergame’s Last Z Survival Shooter

Rivergame's Last Z Survival Shooter scaled to $300K a day in revenue. This time they used the Tap4Fun's Top Girl spin on the onboarding. How can they scale so many games so fast? 😵 The game is done again in their now signature template, of hypercasual runner/shooter during onboarding and then transitions to 4X. Except this time, we have AI-generated girls on top. The 4X engine ⚔️ that they are perfecting since releasing Top War in 2019 is just getting better and better with every next game they release. The game is now landscape instead of portrait, contrary to the rest of their portfolio, but it works even better because of the AI girls functionality they are focusing on. And let me tell you that they supercharged ⚡ what Top Girl did and turned it into their own AI-powered version […]

Supercell global launched Mo.co last week. And?

Supercell global launched Moco last week. Their Action RPG, that got out of its long periodic beta (since Oct. 2023). With around a week of data, there is $350K revenue and 2,5M downloads, which does not seem so super 😟. Let's look deeper into the game 🕵. This is as streamlined ARPG as it gets. You don't collect weapons from the ground and compare them in your inventory, you don't craft specific items, there are no skill trees, there are no gear sockets or enchants, there is not even the armor 🛡️ part of the inventory. You just choose 3 active and passive skills + weapon, which determines your playstyle, and that's it. Later, you get 3 more stat-based elite rings. I think this streamlining process went a little bit too far, or as a veteran ARPG player, I am […]
